The Big Sick Review

By Ian MortonThe Big Sick is a breath of fresh air in a genre that typically follows a frustratingly cliché approach to storytelling.Based on true events, the story follows the relationship between Kumail and Emily in the face of both family pressures and cultural differences.Written by the real-life couple behind the characters, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon loosely recount the beginnings of their relationship in a ways that’s both well balanced and surprisingly familiar. Choosing to base the story in reality is easily its biggest strength as having lived something similar helps bring an honest and authentic touch to both scenarios and characters. While this is common place with most writers, the effect here is three fold as it draws you in, gives you something to relate to and ultimately keeps you invested.Instead of over bloated character introductions, we are thrown in to the relationship faster than the opening credits, only to learn more about individual characters as the story progresses. Not only is this different to well-worn ‘Rom-Com’ plot points, it gives you a reason to keep watching rather than roll your eyes with yet another boring genre trope.While it does run about 10-15 minutes too long, the direction as a whole is well done. Mostly known for his TV work, director Michael Showalter takes a similar approach here with a simple approach to the look and feel of the film. The result is much like its story - a nice, easy watch.Not just happy with writing, Kumail Nanjiani stars in the film with Zoe Kazan bringing Emily’s character to life. With a great chemistry behind them, Nanjiani is hilarious and impressively grounded while Kazan brings the same irresistible charm seen in many of her other roles.
